When Marcia Newlin and Nancy Clarke met in 2007, they were experienced Yoga practitioners and newly-minted Yoga teachers offering classes in Alameda. From this shared backdrop they formed a friendship based on common ideals and goals. In the fall of 2009 they rented a small shared space in a former propeller factory, fitting it for Yoga classes. There, they began to build their student base, offering eight classes a week between them. As their classes grew, so also did the need to expand their schedule; when Marcia discovered a sweet upstairs office for rent on Central Avenue, she and Nancy decided to lease it, put in a hard floor, and open Island Yoga in June of 2010.
With a dedicated space and a seven-day schedule available, there was room to offer more classes and workshops -- and more teachers. One by one they came, to teach their own classes under the umbrella of Island Yoga; hard-working and devoted to their students and their teaching practices.
In June of 2014, Nancy relocated to Seattle leaving the studio in Marcia’s hands. After her departure Marcia missed the camaraderie of a partnership. She eventually appealed to Betsy Weiss, a teacher, friend, and former studio owner. In January 2016 Betsy joined Marcia as partner and co-director of Island Yoga.
In January of 2017, Island Yoga relocated to a lovely ground-floor studio overlooking a peaceful garden courtyard in Alameda’s Ballena Isle Marina. In January of 2018, Marcia begins her long awaited retirement from studio management. Fortunately she will continue to teach her classes at Island Yoga. Betsy will continue as director of the studio with help from all of our amazing teachers.
Today, Island Yoga is recognized for its highly trained and experienced teachers offering a broad range of specialties, small classes for a good teacher-to-student ratio, informative workshops, affordable rates, and, of course, a lovely place to practice.
